Holiday Season Self Care

Holiday Season Self Care -

Holiday Season Self Care -

I am still a little bit shocked that Thanksgiving is THIS WEEK! To me, Thanksgiving always feels like the “official” start of the holiday season and I am so excited.  That said, this time of year can be incredibly stressful! Remember when you were a kid and everything about the holidays felt magical? I think for many people, myself included, that magic can start to fade and be replaced with a feeling of stress, obligation and responsibility.  And when all those feelings start to pile up it can be really overwhelming.  I want to share with you my goal this year and invite you to join me.

Rather than giving in to all the stress and business, I am going to make taking care of myself a priority.  I am giving myself permission to slow down, take a step back, and put myself first every now and then!  I hope you will too!

Holiday Season Self Care

All you have to do is read my blog title to know that I think slowing down is important any time of the year.  When we get busy it can be easy to put ourselves on the back burner and that is what I want to avoid!

Why does it matter?

You can’t fill someone else’s glass with an empty pitcher.  AKA you can’t be your best self for others if you can’t be your best self period.  When you are run down and exhausted it takes its toll on all you do.  Maybe you can do more things with/for your friends and family, but are you really invested in it or are you just faking it?  I have spent a lot (and I mean a lot) of time faking a smile and rolling through thing after thing. That isn’t fair to me or people around me because I am not my best self.  See what I mean?  T

Thanksgiving is the time of year when the hustle and bustle really kicks in and it can be hard to avoid over-committing and feeling obligated to spend all your time doing things for others.  This becomes even more true if you are visiting family or have family coming to visit you! When you only get to see loved ones once in a while it is tempting to spend all your time with them, but it can be so draining!

What do you do about it?

Take a break.  Give yourself permission to make yourself a priority.  If running is how you relax, get out of the house and go for a run.  If running is wearing you out and will only make you feel worse, skip it.  You have to make a commitment to doing the things that are in your best interest.  Now if you really hate Aunt Milly and would be happiest never seeing her again, you might not be able to get away with that.  But if you need to go soak in a bubble bath with a (really big) glass of wine do get ready for the time you have to spend with Aunt Milly? Well that I can support wholeheartedly!

When you take time to take care of yourself you benefit in so many ways.  You become a happier, healthier person.  When  you know what you need to do to feel your best (or at least better) you can more easily fight off some stress and enjoy yourself so much more! It doesn’t have to take up your entire day, even a five minute break can be miraculous!

The holidays are stressful and they are not far away! No matter how much pressure you feel to spend all your time racing around, please do yourself a favor and take some time for yourself.  Take care of yourself so you can actually enjoy this time of year!  Slowing down and investing in your own well being could not be more important.

What is your favorite way to unwind during the holidays?
